Eating Healthy

PSD suports healthy eating policies in the classroom and cafeterias. The Child Nutrition Department is dedicated to providing healthy offerings at all meals with updated menus and a SMART approach:

  • Scratch cooking
  • Minimally processed foods
  • Appealing
  • Regional, Local, Organic
  • Tasty

Child Nutrition is also working with Fuel Up to Play to host a culinary competition each year for middle school students.

1271 MyPlateRemember the Food Guide Pyramid? Well it got a make-over this summer with USDA's new "MyPlate" dietary guidance. Child Nutrition follows the MyPlate guidelines for breakfast and lunch offerings.

 

 

Guidelines for healthy eating:

  • Enjoy your food, but eat less.
  • Avoid oversized portions
  • Make half your plate fruits and vegetables.
  • Make at least half your grains whole grains.
  • Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk.
  • Compare sodium in foods like soup, bread, and frozen meals and choose the foods with lower numbers.
  • Drink water instead of sugary drinks.
